Word stress and rhythm
Which syllable carries the weight — and why equal emphasis sounds robotic.
You can pronounce every sound in a word correctly and still sound foreign. What is missing is weight: German loads one syllable and lets the rest stay light.

Sounding natural is more than sounding out letters
German gives one syllable in a word real weight and lets the rest stay light. If you give every syllable the same emphasis, each individual sound can be correct and the word still sounds foreign.
Most simple German words stress the first syllable. Verbs with an unstressed prefix such as ver-, be-, ent- or ge- move the stress onto the stem instead.
In compound words — and German builds a lot of them — the first part carries the main stress, with a lighter secondary stress later.

In a statement the voice falls at the end: Heute ist Donnerstag.↘
In a yes/no question it rises: Sprechen Sie Englisch?↗
A question with a question word usually falls again: Wie spät ist es?↘
Pause where the meaning pauses — after the subject group, before a long addition — not every three words.
