Ä, Ö, Ü and the Eszett — the four characters English does not have.
Ä, Ö, Ü and ß are not decoration. Two of them are built from sounds you already own, one is easy, and the fourth is a letter people constantly mistake for a B.
Learning objectives
- Produce Ä, Ö and Ü with the correct lip and tongue position.
- Hear meaning-changing umlaut contrasts such as schon / schön.
- Use ß correctly and know when SS is written instead.
Can-Do outcomes
- I can say schön, Tür and Mädchen so a listener hears the umlaut.
- I can hear the difference between musste and müsste.
- I can write words with ß and explain that ß is not a B.
